December trip to California

For 2007 we decided to try something new for Christmas...vacation! We were invited by my good friend Liz to come to their home in Joshua Tree, CA for Christmas. On the way we drove through Las Vegas and decided it wasn't a good thing to drive down the strip with children that can read. Then we got to drive on the famous Route 66 and witness the many "ghost" stations (aka abandon gas stations). Once we arrived our time was filled with hiking and climbing and eating Liz's delicious food. Christmas was kept very simple and we even celebrated it a day early so we could enjoy to good weather in the outdoors. It was a beautiful place surrounded in dessert scenery, quite (except for the coyotes we heard in the back yard at night) and clean air. We spent five days in Joshua tree climbing and exploring. We learned that Gwen is a natural born climber. Everywhere the older kids went she would try to go. She had incredible balence and was able to climb without much help. We then drove to Santa Monica, CA and stayed in their condo. We spent our one day there on the beach and ate at a yummy vegan restaurant where we could even enjoy ordering a desert (a rare treat for this Kibbie family). We loved playing in the sand, but we are still a little perplexed as to how the heck the Griffin family got their huge grand piano into their small windowed condo, with very narrow pathways to the door...they must have magic or something :). After staying in Santa Monica we headed for Phoenix, AZ to visit my childhood friend Melissa Waller. We stayed with her and her boyfriend, Wes, in their condo. She took us for a hike on Camelback Mountain. Some parts were so steep that there were handrails in the rock to help you climb up it. My kids thought this was awesome. On the way down we got to witness one of the famous Phoenix sunsets. It was a beautiful sight! The next day we went to a makeshift western town for kids where we got to witness criminals going to jail and a western show down. Robyn even got to ride the bull without falling off. Well, we ended up flying Aaron home and the kids and I stayed in Joshua Tree for another week while our house was being completed back at home (we had some remodeling done while we were gone). Then it was back to Utah.
